The Department of Neurosurgery, Odense University Hospital (Neurokirurgisk Afdeling U), including the University Center for Spine Surgery (UCR), is pleased to announce the opening for applications to a three-month fellowship in advanced endoscopic skull base surgery.
🧠 About Our Department:
As a regional center for neurosurgery serving approximately 1.2 million people in the Region of Southern Denmark, our department is a hub for both acute and elective neurosurgical care. We operate with 25 inpatient beds, perform around 2,300 surgeries annually (including 850 acute cases), and manage over 8,500 outpatient visits each year.
Our team includes 29 physicians and a robust support staff, all working within a structure that emphasizes subspecialization, interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuous education. We are proud to host several highly specialized functions as outlined in the national specialty plan for neurosurgery, and we maintain strong partnerships with departments across OUH and beyond.
🎓 Fellowship Description:
This three-month fellowship (September–November 2025 (or to be arranged)) is designed for neurosurgical specialists or senior residents with a keen interest in expanded endoscopic approaches to skull base tumors. The fellowship includes:
Hands-on participation in advanced endoscopic skull base surgeries at OUH, including:
Nasal flap techniques (in collaboration with ENT specialists)
Skull base drilling
Dura opening and tumor removal
Closure techniques and postoperative care
Supervised research within the field of endoscopic skull base surgery, with the goal of publishing in a peer-reviewed journal.
A two-week clinical observership at the world-renowned UPMC Center for Cranial Base Surgery in Pittsburgh, USA, under the guidance of Adjunct Professor Eric Wang. This observership offers:
Exposure to cutting-edge surgical techniques not currently available in Denmark or Europe
Interaction with leading ENT and neurosurgeons. Specific time for UPMC sitevisit to be arranged.
Cadaver lab sessions and outpatient clinic observation
The fellowship can be combined with introduction to state of the art intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring.
💼 Eligibility
Applicants must hold a medical degree and have documented experience in neurosurgery, either as a resident or specialist. Selection will be made by the endoscopic skull base team and the department head.
💰 Fellowship Support
The fellowship is supported by Medtronic and includes:
Housing in Odense for three months
Travel and accommodation for the U.S. observership
Total funding: 49,500 DKK
(Note: Salary is covered by the fellow’s home institution)
